Koch Modular’s Houston Team Explores NASA with their Families
Q: Kerri, tell us a little about yourself and your current role with Koch Modular

A: Sure, I’m a piping designer based in Houston in Koch Modular’s piping group. I’ve been with Koch Modular for three years now, and I have proudly been on every Koch Modular outing I can! I’m also a mom to a 13-year-old and an 8-year-old, and in my free time outside of Koch Modular, I run a Girl Scout troop.

Q: Can you share a few highlights from the NASA trip?

A: Koch Modular has employees based all over the US, with a large cluster of employees in Houston, so it was a wonderful, family-friendly opportunity to gather somewhere new and exciting to see familiar faces. We met as a group at the start of the day and had the morning to explore the campus. Everyone had their own tickets, which enabled employees and their families to come and go as they pleased. We regathered in the cafeteria around noon for lunch and a big group photo. All of us employees had such a great time mingling with one another. My kids had a great time interacting with the virtual reality exhibits.

Q: Why are the Koch Modular outings special to you?

A: The Koch Modular outings give me the chance to connect with my coworkers in person. I love working from home, but meeting people face-to-face adds a new level of connection. It’s funny—I’ve been surprised by how tall some people are in real life! Getting to meet everyone’s families is also a huge bonus. Normally, you’d never have the chance to meet your coworkers’ kids, but these outings make it possible, and it’s so sweet. It reminds me that the people I talk to on the screen every day are real people with lives outside of work. Plus, it shows how much the company cares about us as individuals.

Q: What’s next for Koch Modular outings, and are there any other events you’d like to see in the future?

A: I think the annual Topgolf event could definitely make a comeback—it was really well-received when we did it in the past. And the 5K has become a great annual tradition, whether you’re walking or running, it’s always a lot of fun. In the future, I’d love to see something like a team bonding event at Dave & Buster’s here in Houston. It’s a fun, family-friendly option that would work for everyone, no matter their mobility. Another idea I’ve been thinking about is maybe doing a volunteer activity together, like helping out at the Houston Food Bank. We have a lot of people with big hearts in our group, so I think that would be really meaningful. All in all, the employee events are very well received. I hope we continue the tradition for years to come.

Spring-Gathering-QA

In this session, Lisa Dlugo, who has been a vital part of Koch Modular for almost 15 years, shares her experiences in organizing company-wide events and her extensive background in Human Resources. She emphasizes the company’s dedication to encouraging community among employees and highlights their efforts in building connections and enhancing company culture. Lisa also discusses HR goals and offers advice for potential employees, showcasing Koch Modular’s supportive and growth-oriented environment.

Q: Can you tell us about your role and history with Koch Modular and what it’s like to organize company-wide events?

Lisa: As the Human Resources Manager at Koch Modular, I handle all aspects of the Human Resources function, including recruitment, benefits administration, employee relations, performance management, health & safety, ethics & compliance, as well as assisting with facility management of our Headquarters in Paramus, NJ. One of the responsibilities I enjoy is coordinating company events. I have over 30 years of experience in organizing employee events for the various companies I have worked for in the past.  At Koch Modular, I lead the employee activities committee that plans company events ranging from individual regional outings, such as golf or fishing trips, to larger annual all-employee events with team-building activities, typically followed by a cocktail hour and dinner.

Q: Koch Modular hosts company-wide events yearly. What made this one special? What activities took place?

Lisa: We typically host two major events each year to bring together all of our employees who work both on a remote basis and/or onsite at our Paramus, NJ, and Houston, TX locations.  Given our mostly remote work environment, we feel that bringing all of our employees together for in-person events on a regular basis is critical in helping to build relationships, as well as enabling friendships to form. This year is very special because it’s the celebration of Koch Modular’s 25th anniversary, so we flew everyone in to celebrate.  The celebration kicked off with departmental gatherings, training, seminars, and team-building activities. After a nice, casual lunch at the hotel, we enjoyed a cruise on the Hudson River with magnificent views of New York City (including Lady Liberty) and a wonderful dinner. Each attendee received a Koch Modular anniversary gift to commemorate this milestone occasion: a backpack and a mini inspection flashlight.

Q: What was your favorite memory from the 2024 Spring Gathering?

Lisa:  That’s a hard question to answer.  There were so many great memories!  Seeing my coworkers in person is always fantastic, especially newer employees who have joined us on a remote basis. Meeting newcomers face-to-face, as well as reconnecting with old friends and colleagues, is always so much fun. I was pleasantly surprised by the weather; rain was forecasted, but the sun came out just as we boarded the yacht, making for a beautiful afternoon on the river. We had a great turnout, with about 88 people in attendance. It was so enjoyable to have everyone together for this special celebration.

Q: How have Koch Modular company-wide events evolved since you first joined the company?

Lisa: When I first joined the company, our events were quite structured, with the same four outings every year. After a few years, employees expressed a desire for more variety, so we formed an employee activities committee. This committee has enabled us to come up with new ideas and plan diverse events, including family trips to the zoo, bowling, baseball games, golf, participation in corporate 5k fun runs, and ski trips.  Our family event in Houston this summer is a trip to NASA, which I think will be so cool!  We now offer a wide range of activities in both New Jersey and Houston–something for everyone.

Q: Why does Koch Modular invest in company events, and why are these events important to you?

Lisa: Our Executive Committee has always valued bringing people together for non-work-related events to cultivate relationships and help employees get to know each other on a personal basis. These events are crucial because they help build connections and a sense of community, especially among remote employees.  The feedback I have received from employees is that they genuinely appreciate and enjoy these events/gatherings.  We always have a great turnout!  I enjoy meeting and spending time with my coworkers, particularly newcomers who have never physically worked in the office.

Q: From a company culture perspective, can you share some of your goals for the HR department at Koch Modular?

Lisa: My goals for the HR department evolve yearly, but my primary focus is always on providing the best possible service to our employees. I enjoy talking to people and assisting them with various aspects of their work life, whether it be answering questions, offering advice, or resolving issues. I strive to always be accessible to all employees and to implement quality programs, such as new benefit & wellness plans and informative training initiatives. This year, one of my key goals is to update the employee handbook, which will look a bit different from previous handbooks and contain a great deal of new information, as we now have employees in about 18 different states!

Q:   Why would you consider Koch Modular a great place to work?  What advice would you give someone considering a career at Koch Modular?

Lisa:   Koch Modular is a unique company not just in the type of work we do, but in how we interact with each other.  It is a comfortable environment with comradery among coworkers. One of the things that stands out to me is that the Executive Committee and Management Team truly care about their employees. They are all hands-on engineers and managers who value employees’ opinions and contributions. Koch Modular provides opportunities for learning and growth, not only for experienced individuals but also for recent college graduates and professionals early in their careers.  Here, you’ll gain valuable experience as our engineers see a project evolve from conception to delivery, being involved in every aspect of the process. Colleagues often highlight this comprehensive exposure as one of the most rewarding aspects of working at Koch Modular. The Company also provides employees an opportunity to get involved in areas outside of their disciplines. Getting involved in activities outside of one’s specialty area (e.g. participating in a Work Group, Employee Activities Committee, etc.) provides the chance for professional and personal development.  We encourage all employees to get involved and take advantage of all offered opportunities both in and out of their respective disciplines.

Taylor Hembree, Process Engineer at Koch Modular, shares insights about her experience as a selected judge for the 2024 University of Cincinnati College of Engineering and Applied Science Senior Design Expo.

Koch Modular Participates

In the engineering world, bridging the gap between theoretical knowledge gained in academia and practical applications in the industry is crucial. Taylor Hembree, a Process Engineer at Koch Modular and a graduate of the University of Cincinnati (UC) College of Engineering and Applied Science (CEAS), brings a unique perspective to the table. Recently, she served as a judge at the UC Chemical Engineering Senior Design Expo, evaluating projects that represent the culmination of students’ undergraduate education and cooperative education (“co-op”) experiences. In this interview, Taylor shares insights into her role as a judge, the importance of practical experience in engineering design, emerging trends, and the significance of events like the CEAS Design Expo in bridging academia and industry.

Q: Can you tell us about yourself and your role at Koch Modular?

A: I am a proud alumna of the University of Cincinnati, where I earned a degree in Chemical Engineering in 2018. I started my professional career as a Process Engineer, exploring the complexities of the Specialty Chemicals and Oil and Gas industries. Now,  I work in the process engineering group at Koch Modular, where I’ve been involved in several projects, from proposals to detailed designs. It’s been an excellent introduction to Koch Modular’s approach to process design, and I’ve enjoyed it so far.

Q: What is the University of Cincinnati CEAS Design Expo?

A: The CEAS Design Expo is a platform for seniors to showcase their capstone projects. In the chemical engineering program, seniors begin this project in their final semester. They form groups of four to five and devote the entire semester to their project, including a poster and a technical design report. Prizes are awarded to the top three teams, adding an extra incentive beyond final grades.

Q: Why did you decide to be a judge?

A: During my time at UC, I found the senior design experience rewarding, as it provided me with the opportunity to combine my knowledge from the classroom with what I learned from my co-op terms. I always thought it would be enjoyable to participate as a judge in the future. Our design professor, Dr. Thiel, reached out a few years ago seeking additional judges, which immediately piqued my interest. Transitioning from being a student to a judge provided an intriguing shift in perspective. It allowed me to recall the challenges we faced during our design project, and I kept that in mind when reviewing the capstone projects.

Q: Can you share any experiences or insights from your career that influenced your approach to judging these projects?

A: My background before Koch Modular was primarily in the oil and gas industry, including five co-op terms at Marathon Petroleum. This experience provided me with a foundation in troubleshooting and optimization, and now, on the design side, enables me to approach projects from multiple perspectives. Something that may seem excellent in theory can potentially pose significant operational challenges in the field. Because of this experience, I can offer technical and practical lenses when reviewing the capstone projects.

Q: What specific criteria did you prioritize when evaluating the projects?

A: Because the poster presentations factor into the student’s final grades, there is established criteria provided by  Dr. Thiel. However, beyond the rubric, I looked for groups that probed deeper into their projects. It’s one thing just to take the problem statement at face value and process a certain amount of material per hour using a specific technology. I was particularly impressed by teams that went beyond the basics, exploring alternative technologies or leveraging their co-op experience in different parts of their projects. It’s easy to stay within the confines of given guidelines, but those groups that explored unexpected avenues stood out to me.

Q: Can you highlight any trends or emerging technologies you observed across the projects that you believe will significantly impact the chemical engineering field?

A: This year, we noticed a surge of interest in carbon capture and green manufacturing. One team explored direct air carbon capture, while another collaborated with GE Aerospace on CO2 capture from jet engine testing. Some green manufacturing projects included urea synthesis, olefin production from sewer trap grease, and biomass to ethanol conversion. Alongside these, we encountered other unique projects, such as a food-grade vanillin production plant that creatively incorporated vanilla scents in the exhibit. The projects showcased a wide array of technologies, mirroring the broad scope of our work at Koch Modular.

Q: How do you perceive the role of events like the CEAS Design Expo in bridging the gap between academia and industry?

A: Events like the CEAS Design Expo help highlight the benefit of obtaining industry experience during engineering education. While some schools focus more on research, UC’s engineering program emphasizes industry integration, primarily through its co-op program, which includes up to five semesters of full-time work at one or more companies. It is fascinating to observe students’ projects and how they translate theoretical knowledge into practical solutions by leveraging their co-op experience.

Q: Looking forward, do you see Koch Modular attending more events like this?

A: Absolutely. It’s a fantastic opportunity. I love seeing the creativity in the capstone projects and what the next generation of engineers is excited about! It’s also an excellent opportunity to network with other engineering professionals. We had a panel of around 15 judges, each with a different background and industry experience. I made new connections and learned more about other industries and some of the challenges they currently face with their processes. As a representative of the UC and Koch Modular, I am honored to be a selected judge for the 2024 event, and I am very much looking forward to what next year has in store.

Join Chris, a project manager at Koch Modular, as he discusses the company’s culture through the lens of a recent ski trip.

In this Q&A session, we delve into the world of Koch Modular with Chris Loftus, a seasoned project manager deeply involved in the company’s initiatives. Chris sheds light on the recent ski trip he organized for Koch Modular employees, offering valuable insights into its significance for cultivating an engaging company culture in a remote world. From personal skiing anecdotes to inclusive event planning strategies, Chris provides a glimpse into the ethos driving Koch Modular’s dynamic workplace environment.

Q: Chris, can you tell us a little about yourself and your current role at Koch Modular?

A: Certainly. Over the past 15 years, I’ve been with Koch Modular, primarily working within the project management group. My recent focus has been leading significant projects for Developing Technology Companies (DTC). Currently, I’m managing the completion of the PureCycle Ironton project along with the PureCycle Augusta Project.

Q: What was the inspiration behind organizing the recent ski trip for Koch Modular employees? How does such an initiative contribute to the company culture?

A: Finding a work–life balance has always been an important value of mine, and it’s been great working in an environment that supports this value as well. Koch Modular has an activities committee responsible for organizing company events to build that strong community you want in a workplace. We’ve had many employee outings throughout the history of Koch Modular, and because I’m a skier, the ski trips are one of my favorites. Koch Modular recognizes the importance of community in the workplace, and holding events outside of the office is great for facilitating employee bonding. Having that sense of community is especially important now, considering that a lot of the work that we do now is remote. It’s nice to spend time outside interacting with my colleagues, many of whom I don’t get the chance to see very often.

Q: You mentioned that skiing is a passion of yours. Could you tell us a bit about your personal history with the sport and how it has influenced your career?

A:  Skiing has always been a big part of my life. I am a Clarkson University ChemE graduate where I also competed on the Alpine Ski Team for all four years, including qualifying for the USCSA National Championships in 1993 at Squaw Valley California. During the weekends, I am coaching ski racing at Mt. Peter where my two girls also train. I’m passionate about sharing my love for the sport with people of all skill levels, and turning to skiing as a guide for practicing teamwork and trust, overcoming challenges, and remembering to have fun along the way!

Q: As the coordinator of the ski trip, what measures did you take to ensure inclusivity and accessibility for all employees, regardless of their skiing ability or experience level?

A: We made sure to organize an event that encouraged people of all skiing abilities and experience levels to participate and have fun. In fact, about half of the people who came on this ski trip were either brand new skiers, or they had very little skiing experience. We provided rental skis and lessons for our new skiers to learn the basics of skiing before they were off and running down the slopes. We grouped people together according to their experience level, but we stayed close with one another throughout the afternoon, and reconvened in the evening for drinks and dinner.

Q: Could you share a memorable moment from the recent ski trip?

A: We had a lot of new skiers on this trip, and as a ski coach, it brings me a lot of joy to share my love for skiing with my colleagues. One of the highlights of this trip was observing all the progress everyone made. By the end of the day, everyone was up on the lift, and our more advanced skiers advanced to the top summit. And no one got hurt! As a member of the Koch Modular team, it’s great to be a part of this tradition, and I love hearing people tell me they had a great time and are looking forward to going on the trip again next year.

Q: Koch Modular has seen exponential growth in the last couple of years. How have company events evolved and what are you most looking forward to seeing in future events?

A: In the pre-COVID era, there was a large group of us who would get outside at lunch to run, bike, rollerblade or walk. While I miss that opportunity to interact with my peers, I am grateful for the opportunity to have similar levels of interaction, via these outings. I believe it is a critical component for our future success as a remote company, and I am so happy to see the support these activities get from our management. As for future events, I hope to see a bunch of my fellow employees at the 5k Run this spring! The weather is starting to warm, so now is a great time to start training.

Emphasizing the importance of work-life balance and strong employee connections, Koch Modular goes beyond office walls by organizing engaging Zoo Family Outings for its employees and their families.

A positive corporate culture extends beyond the confines of office walls, and Koch Modular recognizes this by organizing two Zoo Family Outings for its employees and their families in Houston and New Jersey. The objective of these outings was simple yet profound—to cultivate an environment that appreciates not just hard work, but also the significance of spending quality time with loved ones.

Adventure and Connection at the Zoos

Koch Modular employees and their families embarked on a day filled with excitement at the Houston Zoo and the Essex County Turtleback Zoo. The day commenced with individuals of all ages exploring the expansive grounds and diverse habitats, while gaining valuable insights about animals and wildlife. After a few hours of exploration, a lunch break provided an opportunity for colleagues and families to bond further.

One of Koch Modular’s Process Controls Engineers, Angelita Gonzalez, states,  “Attending the Koch Modular Zoo Family Outing with my family was an absolute blast! Witnessing the pure joy on my children’s faces as they interacted with the animals was priceless. It warms my heart to be part of a company that not only values its employees but also their families.”

Work-Life Balance and Shared Experiences

By bringing together employees and their families outside the office environment, Koch Modular reinforces the importance of work-life balance and the power of shared experiences as crucial elements of a thriving and harmonious community. These outings serve as a reminder that there is more to life than work, and by immersing themselves in the wonders of nature, employees gain a renewed perspective on the significance of family and personal connections.

Lisa Dlugo, the Human Resource Manager at Koch Modular, emphasizes the value of family-involved company events in promoting employee well-being and happiness. Dlugo explains, “These events exemplify our commitment to our employees and their loved ones. By fostering stronger bonds, creating a positive work environment, and acknowledging the importance of family, we not only attract and retain top talent but also make a meaningful difference in the lives of our employees.”

Conclusion

Koch Modular’s Zoo Family Outings stand as a testament to the company’s dedication to cultivating a positive corporate culture. By organizing these events, Koch Modular demonstrates its appreciation for the well-being and happiness of its employees and their families. The outings serve as a reminder of the importance of work-life balance, allowing individuals to forge stronger bonds and celebrate the significance of shared experiences outside of the workplace. Koch Modular’s commitment to fostering a harmonious community continues to make a positive impact on its employees’ lives, attracting and retaining top talent while prioritizing the holistic well-being of its workforce.

Discover how Koch Modular’s recent company event emphasized the importance of team-building activities for remote working teams.

Koch Modular recently held a two-day company event at the Hasbrouck Hilton Hotel. The event attracted 102 employees, some traveling from out of town to attend. The gathering was a great success, with various engaging and productive activities that brought the company together in person.

The event started with workshops that allowed various departments to conduct team-building activities and discuss department goals and initiatives. These sessions allowed team members to bond, learn new skills, and collaborate more effectively. Tim Jones, Koch Modular Process Engineer, shared his experience of the team-building activities, saying, “As a newer employee at Koch Modular, it was great to finally meet some of my colleagues in person and learn about their ideas and goals. Working remotely can make it challenging to build relationships. Meeting others face-to-face makes reaching out much easier, expanding resources and making work more efficient, personable, and fun.”

Apart from the workshops, the company organized a company-wide murder mystery team-building activity, which proved to be a hit among employees. The event involved working together to solve a fictional murder, which fostered better communication and problem-solving skills and created a sense of teamwork that was hard to achieve virtually. This activity was a perfect example of how in-person events can help to bring a team together and develop stronger relationships.

Such activities provide a fun and interactive way to boost morale and develop colleague relationships. Koch Modular Piping Designer, Cassandra Joe, commented on the murder mystery event, saying, “It was a fun and exciting way to spend time with colleagues while getting to know them better. It was refreshing to step out of our regular work routine and focus on a different activity that allowed us to work together towards a common goal.”

After an eventful team-building day, the Koch Modular team enjoyed a well-deserved dinner party at the Upper Montclair Country Club. The event provided an opportunity to unwind and socialize in a relaxed environment over cocktails and a delicious dinner. The President of Koch Modular, George Schlowsky, emphasized the importance of in-person events in a remote working environment. He stated, “In-person events are a fantastic way to build relationships and create a sense of teamwork that is difficult to achieve virtually. Nothing beats face-to-face interaction, and that’s why these events are so important for our company.” In a world where remote working has become increasingly common, it’s essential to recognize that in-person events can significantly foster community and collaboration within a company.

The Koch Modular company event was remarkable, comprising activities that unified the team in person. Team-building activities such as workshops and murder mystery events provide an excellent opportunity for employees to bond and collaborate, leading to a more robust and effective team. As in-person events continue to play a crucial role in building stronger teams and fostering collaboration, Koch Modular is committed to hosting more events to unite the team.

Recently Koch Modular employees traveled from near and far to participate in the Koch Modular Annual Company Outing held at the Mohonk Mountain House in New Paltz, NY. Throughout the day, employees engaged in group activities such as golf, tennis, basketball, cycling, and hiking, while others enjoyed the scenic views of the Shawangunk Mountains. The one-day event concluded with a cocktail reception and group dinner.

“In a post-Covid world where remote work has become the new normal, we feel that it is important to connect and spend time in person with our employees,” states Koch Modular’s Director of Human Resources, Lisa Dlugo. Many departments jumped on the opportunity for their teams to meet in a more intimate, face-to-face setting the day before the event. The goal was to take advantage of the centralized location for employees to connect with colleagues new and old.

During the event, employees raved about the beautiful weather and were thrilled to finally have a chance to see the faces of those typically behind a screen. “True collaboration happens when employees can build personal connections. As our company continues to grow, the value of in-person gatherings is unmatched. We continue to stress the importance of building connection while providing a flexible, remote-work environment,” states Dlugo.

Koch Modular looks forward to investing in future company events where employees can continue to connect and engage outside of the workplace.

With decades of experience in designing and installing modular separations systems on-site, Koch Modular has built up a reputation for expertise in this area. Our longstanding relationships means quality control and validation you can trust.

But this is only one component, albeit an important one, that has contributed to the remarkable growth of the enterprise.

It is the way in which we engage with our business partners and clients that truly distinguishes Koch Modular.

Our Process Engineering Approach

Before we even begin to design a solution, we all sit down together for an extensive analysis of what the objectives are, what the challenges may be, and strategies for addressing both successfully. For instance, our practical approach to process engineering never optimizes the design without considering the operators who must run the unit.

Defining a comprehensive solution can include:

  1. Technology Development: Conceptualization of Process, Process Simulation, Unit Operations Selection & Pilot Testing
  2. Business Model Analysis: Funding Strategy, Cap Ex/Op Ex Modeling & Performance Guarantee Development
  3. Process Design Package: Detailed Engineering & Construction, Systems Integration

Unwavering Commitment to Achieving Process Engineering Success

It is this caliber of rigorous approach that optimizes the opportunities for maximizing results for the client, and building on our legacy.

“Any time we have a project, we talk to our customers and make sure we’re listening to their concerns,” said Thaddeus Kumor, Process Engineer at Koch. “Because only then can we really come up with appropriate solutions.”

This dedication to collaboration with our clients is not only instilled in everyone who works at Koch Modular, it runs throughout the organization as a foundational operating philosophy that drives the entire company.

This commitment is evident in the individual attitudes of our people, including Teena Martalus, Senior Process Engineer at Koch. “We’re a very dedicated group of engineers, very detail-oriented and also very team focused.”
