An American multinational oil and gas company came to Koch Modular for a complete modular system designed to continuously extract and recover organic acids from a plant aqueous feed stream. The system provided by Koch Modular achieves a treated product containing ≤1100 ppmw organic acids through the use of two-unit operations: one liquid-liquid extraction column and one distillation column. Koch Modular performed extensive pilot testing to meet the organic acid specification in the extraction column raffinate and to generate the VLE data for accurate scale up to the production column.

Koch Modular Process Systems teamed up with sister company Koch Project Solutions to support ReGen III Oil Corporation’s project to build a new re-refinery located in the U.S. Gulf Coast. The re-refinery will process used motor oil into Group II and Group III base oils. Upon completion of detailed design, construction, commissioning, and start-up, this new USGC re-refinery facility will clean and process approximately 78 million gallons of used motor oils per year. Support was more than proof-of-concept because Koch Modular’s units were already installed and working in operating facilities, which made it a natural step forward in this collaboration.

Chemours engaged Koch Modular for a modular reactor and distillation system that produces a chlorinated hydrocarbon used in the manufacture of a refrigerant.

In addition to recovering this product at ≥ 99.5 wt% purity, this system also purifies and recycles unused solvent back into the process. The process design was based upon a client-provided process simulation that was subsequently optimized and simplified by Koch Modular engineers.

Among its many steps, the process consisted of an exothermic reaction taking place in a pumped reactor loop, followed by various purification steps for the recoveries of purified chlorinated hydrocarbon product and unreacted solvent. Although there were some design and project management challenges, Koch Modular engineers successfully accommodated all change orders and client specifications, leaving the client’s concerns addressed and needs satisfied.

An Asian international chemical company came to Koch Modular for the manufacture of a column to be used for the extraction of an organic acid from an aqueous feed stream using toluene as the solvent.

The client was considering different types of extraction columns and wanted Koch Modular’s expertise in choosing and designing the appropriate separations process.

After comprehensive pilot testing at a Koch Modular facility located in Houston, TX and observing nuances unique to the client’s extraction process, Koch Modular provided a SCHEIBEL®column that generates a raffinate with <1.7% acrylic acid from a feed containing 65-70% acrylic acid.

Koch Modular worked with a Canadian world-class science facility (“the client”) to complete one of its most interesting projects to date. 

The client engaged Koch Modular for the manufacture of a modular system designed to purify linear alkylbenzene (LAB) and to be installed nearly 2 kilometers underground. This solvent would get used in a liquid scintillator in their experiment to detect neutrinos. 

The client trusted Koch Modular’s process design experience in solvent purification, as well as overall expertise in detailed modular engineering and project management to provide this unconventional purification system.
